Highly-Trained Eye Care Professionals

What is an Eye M.D.?

An Eye M.D. is an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor specializing in eye and vision care. Eye M.D.s can provide a full range of eye care services, including prescriptions for contact lenses and complex eye surgery. Eye M.D.s often participate in scientific research to find cures and causes for vision and eye diseases.

Education & Training

Each Eye M.D. has four years of medical school plus one year of internship. Every Eye M.D. completes at least three years of residency (hospital-based training) in ophthalmology. Eye M.D.s get special training during residency in all aspects of eye care, including prevention, diagnosis, and medical and surgical treatment of eye conditions and diseases.

An Eye M.D. often spends an additional one or two years training in a subspeciality, or a specific area of eye care (for example, glaucoma or pediatric ophthalmology).

Board Certification

A majority of Eye M.D.s, but not all, are board certified. A board-certified Eye M.D. needs to pass a rigorous two-part examination from the American Board of Ophthalmology to evaluate their knowledge, skill, and experience.
